spanking your fellow republicans for getting their clocks cleaned by mr. obama in that debate. tell me what you are upset about and is there some revenge exacted? >> we have very severe long- term fiscal problems. i think there is a lot more that is at the big banks door and the federal reserve's door. it is amazing neither party has been willing to look at the problems. we are faced with enormous long-term challenges on the fiscal side. i thought the whole process was wrong. i have a bias. i was speaker of the house. the idea that the senate at the last minute would write an entire bill, put whatever they wanted into it, send it over, and say, pass it as we wrote it. we will not touch it again. and the house said, ok. crazy. nobody read that bill. it violated everything republicans complained about with the stimulus. the minimum they could have done was brought it up, actually read it, maybe had a hearing to find out what was in it and what did it mean. there were millions of dollars willi understand why the president wants to take care of its friends. what did that have to do with the bil

think like all politicians, he is muddying the waters. mr. obama is doing something totally unconstitutional to begin with. that is neither here nor there. the government has gotten so large and so big, they are involving themselves in everything not important to the average citizen. it is my opinion that what we need to do is to stop all of the stuff the government is getting involved in. the way to do that is through a fair, flat tax. host: we are not really talking about that this morning. we are talking about the gun proposals specifically. what kind of gun do you have? caller: i have more than one because i am a hunter. i enjoy hunting. again, back to what we were saying before. that is about all i want to say about it. i think mr. obama and the congress both do not have a clue about what is going on out here in the real world. host: adalfo, what are your thoughts? caller: when i went to high school there was a police presence at all times. the sheriffs are the -- in charge of the campus. in regards to the president's comments, i think there are far reaching and might b

? the capacity you know, we were wrong about obama. he is not really our guide. he is pro not the one to do very much to infringe on gun rights. well, they went back and said exactly the date -- the same things in 2012 that they said in 2008. i am afraid the nra is mostly interested in whipping up hysteria to raise money for itself and to perpetuate itself rather than to do anything particularly productive. >> soap responsible members of the nra, wonder if they will raise their hand and say wait a minute. >> i wouldn't hold my breath on that. >> how much do you think the nra is promoting the interest of gun manufacturers and gun sellers? >> i don't know where they get their funding. obviously they get some from the gun industry. you can make a sort of case that the sort of tactics they used are helpful to get sales. you have a big surge in debt sales after obama was reelected. there are some places where big stores ran and ammunition. >> i look back at 9294 and also for, the big mistake is not enough pressure -- to much focus on the nra and not enough focus on what the gun manufacturers are doin

and the government of mr. obama, that they can listen other voices on a very delicate subject to security. what are we doing, local governments facing challenges that sometimes go out of our hands and anyway we have to deal with them. there is no doubt that the main concern, for instance, in my city in northeast mexico is a border state with taxes. too often, cities have borders with the rio, texas that we also have my city on the southeast part of the state and it's a strategic location. my city the city of 670,000 people. it's a big city. the metropolitan area sharing the space which has two cities, our neighbors in another city, which is my city. there is no doubt that the main concern of the people in the border areas on the mexican side is the demand for safety and the demand for security. this demand is being heard louder and louder than the demands for employment and secret services, which is what we mayors do. when i was listening of course for job creation, economic development. but i mexico, it's becoming also one of the major necessities, which was than in the past, but is now. the f

in the nation today. it is the only path forward. >> should president obama invoke the 14th amendment and make congress deal with the debt ceiling? >> i hope it does not come to that but if it has to, it must. you know we can't let extremists put us in default and play chicken with a full faith and credit with the united states of america. that's what they are. when people say let's go into default. when i hear people who are elected to congress say let's go into default. i say this person is from some other planet. this person is not from this planet. the notion that we would do that boggles the mind and the good common sense of the vast majority of americans. >> what is your perspective on america's melting pot being better reflected in small towns? what would urban leaders learn from small town mayors? >> i mean -- i think we're enriched. i know i am. my kids have grown up. i tell people my kids have been in the homes of iranians, koreans, mexicans, italians, and greeks, muslims, we're enriched when we can experience other cultures and people and other perspectives. i think you're seeing th

applaud president obama and vice president biden for proactively taking the necessary steps to address this critical issue. it's going to take all of us united, regardless of party affiliation or our differing views on constitutional rights, to stem this tide of violence. more importantly we must take a hard look at funding for mental health services and other services. we must look at sinking technology -- syncing technology to ensure proper and tighter access to firearms. we must place adequate controls on ammunition. bottom line, we must protect our schools, our communities, children and families must be safe. i respectfully ask my colleagues to make this issue of violence a priority and to support our nation's leadership as they work through resolving this challenge which should not be difficult. if we compromise and keep focusing on saving lives. madam chair, i pledge to support you and to support all my other colleagues with the congressional black caucus to make a difficult task safe and to protect the lives of our children and families from gun fire and a culture of violence. .

of the public statements we have seen since president barack obama said it was time for meaningful action to reduce gun violence, because what we have seen this many people argue the president is taking away our rights. i call this confusion, because many people apparently have not been reading the court cases that interpret the second amendment and tell us what it means. as larry and i argue in our contribution, the most popular proposals being considered today are likely constitutional. that is not to say there are not any questions about any of them, but they are likely to be upheld by the supreme court should they be enacted. from background checks to restrictions on sale of high- capacity magazines and even a ban on assault weapons, we think it is likely the supreme court will uphold these provisions. in defense of those who do seem confused about the nature of our second amendment rights, the supreme court has not done a great job of clarifying what is the scope of our second amendment rights. as most of you know, in 2008, the supreme court held that the second amendment protects th

energy and that is the obama administration with secretary salazar. we need to diversify our local economy in virginia. i hope we can work with both of our senators to get this done. host: we are talking with representative scott rigell. this is a headline in "the washington post." she talks about a new freshman class of republicans and your class as well that had been a headache for the speaker. there will be a test on tuesday. where do you come down on this? guest: i think we have been good for the speaker. i am not dodging the questione. everybody needs to shoot straight. i do not know how i will vote on the particular bill. it has only come out in the last day or so. we have not anticipated and planned for these type of natural disasters. you would think we would have budgeted enough. either we're not done a good estimates or we are spending far more than we should. i will be evaluating that. i know there will be some amendments. there are some things that i don't think most americans would not funded. therein lies the challenge. every bill we vote on on typically has some thin
